The Firefly Clinic Pro by Bales Photonics: the control unit with intensity, frequency and timer dials, and its two light wands
What it is

Light therapy, personalized by a clinician.

Firefly shines red and near-infrared light on the body. The research term is photobiomodulation, or PBM.

The device

The Firefly Clinic Pro, made by Bales Photonics. It combines red and near-infrared light with light frequency settings. That's why you may hear it called light frequency therapy.

Chosen for you

There are 8 wavelengths. Aaron Winning picks the ones for each session, based on your goals and your F-Scan. Then he works on each area for a few minutes.

The science

What the light does in your cells.

It's the question clients ask most. Here is what researchers have found so far, in plain words.

  1. Light reaches the cell

Red and near-infrared light pass through the skin into the tissue below. Near-infrared travels deeper.

  2. Mitochondria absorb it

Mitochondria are the power plants of your cells. An enzyme inside them, cytochrome c oxidase, absorbs the light.

  3. Cells make more energy

The enzyme works more efficiently, so cells make more ATP, the fuel they use to work and repair. This is one of the most consistent findings in lab studies.

  4. Nitric oxide is released

Light is thought to free nitric oxide that was slowing the enzyme down. Nitric oxide also relaxes blood vessels, which supports circulation.

  5. Repair signals switch on

A brief, small burst of signaling molecules turns on genes linked to tissue repair and to calming inflammation.

Why the dose matters

Light follows a "just right" curve. Too little does little, and too much can cancel out the benefit. That's why Aaron sets the wavelengths, frequencies and time for each area instead of running a preset program.

Where this comes from

Most of this was worked out in cell and animal studies, and researchers say the full picture is still being mapped. A good overview is Freitas and Hamblin, "Proposed Mechanisms of Photobiomodulation or Low-Level Light Therapy," IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, 2016.

Reviewers mention relief from pain, inflammation and gut trouble, and skilled, attentive care.

I cannot say enough good things about this place! Aaron is one of the kindest most compassionate people I’ve met in the wellness space. He’s super knowledgeable about all of the modalities he uses and makes sure you’re aware and comfortable every step of the process and takes plenty of time to listen and strategize. I did some acupuncture at Julius and always love that, but the thing that brought me to his office was a light device called the Firefly. He’s the only one in our area to have one and let me tell you, it saved my life. I was at the mercy of IBS for over 10 years and it ruled my life. I heard about someone having success recovering from Alphagal with the use of this device and decided to try it because why not. I tried literally everything else to no avail. Other things worked temporarily, but never got to the root cause. A ton of health issues people have these days originate in the gut. I went in for a scan and then after 6 treatments using the Firefly over my stomach and vagus nerve, my symptoms were gone and I have my life back! The treatments are short and simple and beyond effective (and affordable). I will be forever grateful for the creator of this device and for Aaron and his patience working through this process with me. I tell everyone I meet who is struggling with anything like this about Aaron. If you are thinking about scheduling any services with him, the answer is yes…do it. Your nervous system will thank you.

Most recently I’ve received Firefly Light Therapy on my gut for inflammation, after 3 treatments the skin eczema is gone and gut bloating has diminished. Yesterday I went in with pain in the top of my feet and today the intense pain is gone. Aaron is very knowledgeable, thorough, and caring. If you are having any type of inflammation or discomfort, I highly recommend you reach out to Aaron for an appointment!

Arron is a highly skilled acupuncturist and fire fly red light technician. His use of acupuncture and red light therapy has helped my body heal from a few chronic health issues so much faster and safer than any conventional therapies I’ve tried. Fire fly red light therapy and light frequency healing is quite amazing! I highly recommend Aaron!

I've been really pleased with the level of care and attention Aaron has given me at Julius Wellness. I came in to see Aaron in March after being diagnosed with Central Serous Chorioretinopathy, a condition where fluid accumulates under the retina, causing vision blind spots. The vision loss was very disorienting and exhausting. And there is no clear cause for this according to my ophthalmologist who was simply monitoring the fluid. After 5 short light therapy sessions with Aaron, the fluid reduced significantly and my vision improved. After about a month, I am back to 90%. I'd highly recommend Aaron and his light therapy sessions for whatever ails you. He is thorough with his explanations and very kind and supportive. Thank you Aaron!

Research

What the research is exploring

Photobiomodulation (red and near-infrared light) is being studied in early, small trials for brain and gut health, including in people living with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Please read

These studies used various light devices and protocols, not necessarily Firefly.

Firefly is a general wellness device. It is not a treatment for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease or any other disease.

If you live with a neurological or digestive condition, keep working with your physician. Aaron is glad to coordinate with your care team.

FAQ

Questions about Firefly.

Does Firefly hurt?

No. Firefly is non-invasive and painless, and there are no needles. You rest while Aaron works through each area, a few minutes at a time.

How many sessions will I need?

Bales Photonics, the maker of Firefly, suggests a series of about 4 sessions to see how you respond. After that, you and Aaron decide what makes sense. Results vary from person to person.

How is Firefly different from a red light bed at a gym or spa?

A red light bed or panel is usually self-serve, with the same light over your whole body. Firefly is guided by a licensed acupuncturist. Aaron chooses among 8 wavelengths for each session, uses an F-Scan to personalize it, and targets the areas you came in for.

Can I combine Firefly with acupuncture?

Yes. The acupuncture + Firefly combo gives you both in one visit. It is $225 for about 90 minutes, which saves $40 vs. booking both.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

HSA and FSA cards are accepted for acupuncture. For Firefly, check with your plan administrator before you book.
